  • Provided grants to support field research on tropical bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases, including endemic impetigo in Puerto Rico, “immersion foot syndrome,” in Vietnam and endemic scabies in the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama.
  • Supported a global health initiative to eradicate scabies in the indigenous Kuna Indian population of the San Blas Islands that led to validation of 5 % Permethrin cream as the preferred treatment.
  • Supported ground breaking research in the Everglades and Vietnam that discovered that a coating of silicone grease could prevent warm water immersion foot syndrome.
  • Supported an open label research trial that found that a single dose of ivermectin is an effective treatment for scabies in healthy patients and many patients with HIV infection.
  • Supported a pivotal study that found that topical mupiricin is a safe and effective alternative to oral antibiotic therapy in the treatment of impetigo.
